Security data pipeline, SIEM & detection engineering FAQ
Straight answers on security data pipelines, Cribl and DataBahn, detection engineering, security data lakes, SIEM optimization and migration, and how we work with MSSPs and enterprises.
Security data pipeline
Collecting, normalizing, filtering and routing security telemetry before it reaches your SIEM.
What is a security data pipeline and why do SOC teams need one?
A security data pipeline sits between your log sources and your destinations, such as a SIEM, a security data lake or an archive. It collects, parses, normalizes, enriches, filters and routes telemetry so each destination receives only the data it needs, in the format it expects. SOC teams use it to control SIEM cost, onboard sources faster and avoid lock-in to a single platform.
Do you implement Cribl and DataBahn?
Yes. We design, deploy, migrate and optimise Cribl Stream, Cribl Edge and DataBahn, and we also build on open-source and next-generation pipeline engines, Vector, Fluent Bit, Logstash and the OpenTelemetry Collector. We recommend the platform that fits your volumes, team skills, data-residency needs and budget, and we're open about our partner relationships.
How much can a security data pipeline reduce SIEM ingestion costs?
Typical engagements reduce SIEM ingestion by 30–70%, depending on your source mix and how much filtering is already in place. We separate compliance retention from detection needs, archive compliance logs on low-cost storage and keep only detection-relevant data in the SIEM.
How do you filter logs without creating detection blind spots?
Every reduction rule is validated against your detection content. We map rules and use cases to MITRE ATT&CK, identify the fields and events each one depends on, and only drop, summarise or reroute data that no detection needs. Full-fidelity copies can still go to the archive for investigations and audits.
Which schemas do you normalize to?
We normalize to OCSF, Elastic Common Schema (ECS) or Splunk CIM, depending on your SIEM and data lake. A common schema means detections, dashboards and hunts keep working when you add or change platforms.
Can you build parsers for niche or custom log sources?
Yes. We build parsers for unsupported and in-house sources, map them to your chosen schema, validate them against sample data and hand them over with tests and documentation.
Detection engineering
Building, tuning and validating threat detections as code.
What does a detection engineering engagement involve?
We baseline alert volume, false-positive rate, rule health and MITRE ATT&CK coverage, then improve detection quality in priority order: removing noise, closing coverage gaps for the threats that matter to your sector and region, and putting detections under version control with automated testing.
How do you reduce false positives without losing coverage?
We map each rule to ATT&CK techniques, tune thresholds and allow-lists against real baseline data, add contextual enrichment and apply targeted suppression rather than blanket exclusions. Coverage is tracked before and after, so you can see that alert volume fell while detection coverage held or improved. Typical engagements cut alert volume by 40–80%.
Do you write new detection rules or only tune existing ones?
Both. Tuning usually delivers the fastest win. New rules follow a documented detection-as-code workflow: threat hypothesis, data-source check, rule development, testing against emulated attacks, peer review and deployment through CI/CD.
Do you use Sigma rules?
Yes. Wherever possible we write detections in Sigma, the vendor-neutral rule format, and compile them to SPL, KQL, EQL, AQL or YARA-L. Your detection library stays portable if you change SIEM.
How do you measure detection engineering outcomes?
We measure the same KPIs before and after delivery: alert volume, false-positive rate, MITRE ATT&CK coverage, mean time to detect (MTTD), rule maintenance effort and ingestion volume.
Security data lake
Long, searchable retention at a fraction of SIEM cost.
What is a security data lake?
A security data lake stores large volumes of security telemetry on low-cost object storage in open formats such as Parquet and Apache Iceberg. It supports threat hunting, investigations and compliance retention without the cost of keeping everything in your SIEM.
Which query engines and storage platforms do you support?
We build security data lakes on ClickHouse, Snowflake, Databricks, Google BigQuery, Azure Data Explorer, Amazon Security Lake, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Trino and Amazon Athena, on Amazon S3, Azure Data Lake Storage, Google Cloud Storage or on-premises S3-compatible storage such as MinIO.
How does hot, warm and cold tiered storage work?
Hot storage keeps recent, detection-grade data in the SIEM for real-time alerting. Warm storage keeps searchable data for hunting and forensics at lower cost. Cold storage keeps compressed, full-fidelity archives for compliance, with documented recall into the SIEM when an investigation or audit needs it.
Can our security data stay inside the country?
Yes. We design in-region cloud and on-premises deployments to meet data-residency and sovereignty requirements in India, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Malaysia and Singapore, including on-premises object storage where cloud regions aren't an option.
SIEM optimization & migration
Getting more from your current SIEM, or moving safely to a new one.
What is a SIEM Health Score?
Our SIEM Health Score rates five areas: log source coverage, ingestion efficiency, detection coverage, alert fidelity and rule lifecycle management. Each finding comes with a prioritised roadmap of quick wins and longer-term fixes.
Can you improve our existing SIEM without migrating?
Yes, and that's where most engagements start. We only recommend migration when there's a clear capability gap or a strong cost case. Many clients get the savings they need from ingestion optimisation, licence right-sizing and detection tuning on their current platform.
Which SIEM platforms do you work with?
Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel, Elastic Security, Google SecOps, IBM QRadar and OpenSearch, among others. For Elastic and OpenSearch we also offer licensing advice, deployment and managed optimisation.
How long does a SIEM migration take?
Most migrations take 8–20 weeks, depending on the number of sources, detections and tenants. We put a security data pipeline in front of both platforms, so old and new can run in parallel and detections can be compared before cutover.
Observability pipelines
Telemetry cost and alert-noise control for DevOps and SRE teams.
How is observability work different from SIEM work?
Observability engineering serves DevOps and SRE teams with operational visibility into application and infrastructure health. SIEM work serves the SOC with security detection. Both rely on well-engineered telemetry pipelines, and we often design one pipeline layer that feeds both.
How do you reduce observability costs and alert noise?
We filter and aggregate in the pipeline, control metric cardinality, apply sampling and tiered retention, and move alerting to SLO-based rules with deduplication and severity-based routing. OpenTelemetry instrumentation keeps you portable between backends.
MSSPs & enterprises
How we support service providers and in-house security teams.
Do you work with MSSPs, MDRs and SOC providers?
Yes. We work closely with and support both MSSPs and enterprises. For providers we build multi-tenant pipelines with per-customer routing and cost attribution, reusable detection libraries across tenants and SIEMs, and white-label engineering capacity for your delivery team.
Do you work with enterprises and Global Capability Centres (GCCs)?
Yes. Enterprises and GCCs engage us to control SIEM cost, prove detection coverage to auditors and boards, meet retention and data-residency requirements, and modernise their SIEM without disrupting the SOC.
What does vendor-neutral mean at HIT Services?
Recommendations follow your requirements, not a single vendor's roadmap. We work across commercial and open-source pipelines, SIEMs and data lakes, we disclose partner relationships, and we document trade-offs so you can make the decision.
Which regions do you cover?
We deliver remotely and on-site across India (Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and Delhi NCR), Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Malaysia and Singapore. Our registered offices are in Mumbai, Khobar and Doha.
Do you support on-premises, cloud and hybrid deployments?
Yes. We engineer on-premises, cloud and hybrid architectures, and we account for data-localisation rules such as India's CERT-In directions, Saudi NCA controls and Qatar's NIA policy when deciding where logs are processed and stored.
Engagement model & team
How engagements are scoped, priced and delivered.
What happens on the discovery call?
It's a structured 45-minute conversation about your environment, the problem you're solving, your team and your timeline. There's no sales pitch and no commitment. Discovery calls and proposals are free.
How do you scope and price engagements?
We scope on environment complexity, number of sources and detections, depth of delivery and knowledge-transfer needs, and we quote fixed-scope, fixed-price proposals with clear success criteria.
How long do engagements take?
A current-state assessment takes about 2–4 weeks. A full optimisation typically takes 6–12 weeks, and large or multi-tenant environments can take 3–4 months. You'll see first measurable outcomes within the first 30 days.
Who does the engineering work?
Senior engineers with 10+ years in log engineering, detection engineering and SIEM operations, holding certifications across the major platforms. Delivery is hands-on inside your environment under your change control; advisory-only engagements are also available.
What knowledge transfer do we get?
Every engagement includes documentation, runbooks, walkthroughs and hands-on labs, plus 30 days of post-delivery Q&A. Your team owns the outcome after we exit.
Do you offer ongoing support or retainers?
Yes, optionally. Retainers are scoped to real ongoing needs, such as new source onboarding, detection updates or quarterly reviews, and are not designed to create dependency.
